The beach’s white coral sand contrasts sharply with the surrounding aquamarine lagoon, which shelters extensive coral reefs and seagrass beds that support hawksbill and green sea turtles.
Ecological importance
The beach and surrounding waters form part of a critical habitat for nesting sea turtles and numerous tropical fish species. The area is a federally designated monument to preserve its coral reef ecosystem, which includes the well-known underwater snorkeling trail maintained by the U.S. National Park Service.
Recreation and access
Visitors can only reach Turtle Beach by authorized boat tours or private vessels, as the island has no accommodations or dock facilities. Activities include snorkeling, swimming, and wildlife observation. All visitors must follow strict conservation guidelines to protect the fragile environment.
Conservation and management
Since its designation as part of Buck Island Reef National Monument in 1961, Turtle Beach has been protected from development and overuse. The U.S. National Park Service enforces regulations limiting visitor numbers, anchoring, and fishing to maintain the area’s natural integrity and support ongoing ecological research.
