Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is a federally protected coastal reserve at the southwestern tip of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Established in 1984, it safeguards one of the Caribbean’s longest white-sand beaches and serves as critical nesting habitat for endangered sea turtles, particularly the leatherback. The refuge balances sensitive wildlife conservation with limited public recreation.

Conservation and wildlife
The refuge’s primary mission is to protect nesting sites for leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtles. During the annual nesting season, the entire beach is closed to minimize disturbance, while biologists and volunteers monitor nests and assist hatchlings. The area also preserves dry-forest habitat and the endangered Vahl’s boxwood tree, alongside the prehistoric Aklis archaeological site.
Landscape and recreation
Stretching roughly two miles along the island’s west end, Sandy Point features soft white sand, turquoise waters, and panoramic views toward the Caribbean Sea. Its untouched landscape makes it ideal for nature photography, hiking, and guided turtle-watching programs. There are no visitor facilities or shade structures, emphasizing minimal-impact recreation in a natural setting.
Access and visitor regulations
To protect wildlife, access is restricted to weekends outside the nesting months. Vehicles, pets, and staked umbrellas are prohibited on the sand, and visitors are urged to use reef-safe sunscreen. Entry is via the Melvin H. Evans Highway through a gated dirt road leading to limited parking near the beach.
Cultural and media notes
Sandy Point’s pristine beauty gained wider attention when it appeared in the closing scene of The Shawshank Redemption. The refuge remains part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex, underscoring its regional role in preserving the biodiversity of the U.S. Caribbean.
